Shankle may be a long shot to medal in London, but his pursuit of that goal may not be the most difficult challenge he’s faced. Shankle is a Marine Corps veteran, serving a tour of duty in Iraq. He writes a blog and contributes to California Strength’s website, often providing inspirational stories and messages for those wanting to learn more about fitness and the sport of weightlifting. Shankle is a four-time national champion and was recognized as the United States’ most inspirational lifter at the 2007 Arnold Classic – named for former bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shankle has conducted many interviews and makes a majority of his training public with videos on the Internet. A religious man, he often quotes the bible during his inspirational posts on his blog, where he details his training for the London Games. Shankle took the bronze in the 105 kg category at last October’s Pan-Am Games, maxing out with a 165 kg snatch and a 203 kg clean and jerk
